As a kid, I didn’t generally wear a hat. In my teens, maybe my 20′s I’d grab a ball cap time to time…and man, how I’d sunburn. My fair skin and blue eyes, and lack of serious sunblock application did a number on me. I’d pop suntan lotion on in the morning at the beach and think it was enough to cover me the full day. We were still learning – and to this day 20 years later, I still have some sunspots behind my knees from one particularly bad burn that left me barely able to walk the week I got it.
As an adult, I see how much more attention has been given to sun protection – and I take it seriously. I’m seeing the effects the sun has had on my now aging skin. I spent so many summers sunbathing, and in my 40′s that changed skin is showing me how I spent my time in youth.
Now, when I’m in the sun for awhile – I have a great sun hat that offers protection and shades my face. In fact I have a couple of them, because I’m the kind of person who “forgets” them time to time. Now I have them in multiple locations – one in my car, one at the house, one at my regular vacation destination – so that I always have a sun hat handy for protection….I’ve finally learned, have you?
